What You Need to Know Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What You Need to Know Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes numbness or weakness in your hand. This condition is also called median nerve compression. This is because your median nerve runs the length of your arm, passes through the passage in your wrist called the carpal tunnel and ends in your hand. The median nerve controls your thumb and finger movements with the exception of your pinky.

Symptoms

  • Burning, itching, tingling in the palms and thumbs, index and middle fingers

  • Weak hands and problem to hold

  • Tingling sensation moving down the arms

Causes

  • Repetitive motions like typing or repetitive wrist movements

  • Rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, diabetes, hypothyroidism

  • Pregnancy

Constant Typing Might Not Be the Reason

There are several risk factors behind the carpal tunnel which thought experts have not yet identified a single cause. One is born through the genetics of a tight carpal tunnel. It can also lead to health conditions like pregnancy, menopause, obesity, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, because these lead to swelling that puts the carpal tunnel under stress, be they through weight gain, inflammation, fluid retention, or another mechanism. Here are some carpal tunnel treatment options.

Cold Compress

The cold temperature can help to reduce inflammation of the median nerve and relieve pain associated with the carpal tunnel. Remove the ice for 30-40, ice again for 10-15 minutes. Ice it 10-15 minutes. Do not use ice more than required. This can damage your skin and decrease blood flow.

Wrist Splints

A splint helps ensure that during your sleep you don't keep your wrist bent for hours. During the day when you are aware of these, you don't have to immobilize your wrists but many times, when people sleep, they curl like a fetus and bend their wrists naturally. That can lead to a flare of the carpal tunnel and it will cause you to sleep very rudely.

Pain Medications

Two options for carpal tunnel treatment are essentially available. The median nerve swelling can be cut down or the canal bigger. The swelling which makes the median nerve worse can be alleviated by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. At present, this can help, but it is not a long-term solution.
