When surgery is NOT an option:
Conservative treatment may be the best course of management to alleviate pain and provide functional restoration. Patients may be referred to a physiatrist, a medical doctor specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Treatment may include medication, physical therapy and further diagnostics, such as EMG and Nerve Conduction Studies. Further conservative management may be provided by an anesthesiologist, who may perform discography, epidural steroid injections and/or selective nerve root blocks.
